about the summer musical theatre intensive...
Director, Michelle Fiertek
The Summer Musical Theatre Intensive (SMTI) is a personalized preprofessional program intended to provide singers, actors, and dancers with a concentrated opportunity to integrate their vocal, dramatic, and dance skills, taking their abilities to the next level.
SMTI is designed to address the wide-ranging needs of the outstanding young performer. Participants will receive daily instruction in voice, acting, and dance, with individual coaching time to address the specifics of their voice and character work. In addition, this year SMTI is excited to introduce Suzuki acting training. Pioneered by Tadashi Suzuki, an acclaimed Japanese theatrical visionary, this technique emphasizes focus, concentration, body awareness, and development of the actor's center through physical exercises that harness the human body's animal energy.
Master classes will be given on song preparation, audition technique, and performance technique by the extraordinary Sheri Sanders (author of Rock the Audition), and esteemed members of The Hartt School theater division faculty.
Class work, scene work, and musical training will merge together to form a culminating showcase performance on the final day of the two-week program. SMTI participants will focus on individual process and development of their performance skills. Musical and dramatic literature is hand-picked for each student based on their audition performance. With materials and roles tailored to each individual, participants have greater opportunities to take risks, conquer challenges, and grow as performers.
